Whilst the fashionable London gunmakers were making a name for themselves in the nineteenth century with their expensive bespoke weapons made in limited quantities, there was a separate gunmaking industry flourishing in Birmingham and the surrounding towns. Although a few traditional makers have survived, most of the gunmaking names to be found within these covers have been amalgamated into other businesses or are now defunct. However, there were and still are gunmakers throughout the country who were able to compete internationally with those of London. Names such as Greener, Westley Richards, Powell in Birmingham, Gibbs in Bristol, Green in Cheltenham, and the Scottish makers of Edinburgh and Glasgow such as Dickson, MacNaughton, Henry, Mortimer, Martin, and more recently Mackay Brown. These are the names known to firearms collectors and users worldwide not just for the weapons they have built, but for many of the innovative designs they developed. This book sets out the history of the Birmingham, Scottish, and regional gunmakers and specialist trade workers throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with individual histories of sixty businesses as well as details of their serial number records, many of which have never been published before. If you like British guns and are interested in their history, this set must not be missed.
