British Cartridge Manufacturers, Loaders and Retailers by William Harding
British Cartridge Manufacturers, Loaders and Retailers by William Harding
There is a growing number of cartridge collectors, particularly those interested in paper shotgun cartridges. As the demand for old cartridge specimens has grown so has their value and numerous specimens are now over one hundred years old and are getting harder to find each year.

This is a reference book written for collectors and it contains a rich mine of historical information that has never been recorded in any other book. It covers, among many others the following British firms; Daw, Joyce, Nobel, Greenwood and Batley, Remington & Union Metallic Cartridges, Hull Cartridges, Cogswell and Harrison, Schutze, Hellis and a slew of others. Most of these companies, who once produced these collectors' items, no longer exist and if it was not for the author's efforts their histories would have been lost.

The book is chock full of historical photos showing the inside the of the factories with workers, machinery and peculiar equipment used the make these cartridges. There are also period advertisements, scores of contemporary color images of metallic and paper cartridges, in all hundreds of illustrations. In addition there are maps, tables, charts, detailed list of manufacturers and their products and a great many head stamp drawings all of which a delight for the collector and anybody who is interested in the history of the British arms industry from the Victorian era forward.

This book deals with all British sporting manufactures with the exception of Ely and the Birmingham makers which were covered in previous books by the author.

The Best Of British: A Celebration of British Gunmaking by Vic Venters and David Grant
The Best Of British: A Celebration of British Gunmaking by Vic Venters and David Grant
Vic Venters has for years been writing about the finest British shotguns and their makers, and David Grant has photographed countless top-end guns in a most artistic manner. Now the two of them have teamed up to give us a coffee-table book on the finest products made by gunmakers in the United Kingdom today. Most of the guns are side-by-side shotguns, but there is a sprinkling of over-and-unders, bolt-actions, and double rifles. The pair selected from each gunmaker some of the most unusual, superlatively engraved, and most elaborate guns to be featured in this book. Besides showcasing guns of absolutely astonishing quality, there are some very unusual firearms depicted, such as a rib-less side-by-side, a three-barrel, and even a four-barrel gun.

The list of makers is too long to list here, but a few will suffice: A. A. Brown, David MacKay Brown, E. J. Churchill, John Dickson, William Evans, Stephen Grant, W. W. Greener, Holloway and Naughton, Joseph Lang, Manton, Peter Nelson, Westley Richards, and James Woodward. Of course the Big Three from London were also included: Boss, Holland & Holland, and Purdey. The whole is completed with an overview of active makers in the United Kingdom today, which can be found in a section at the rear.

This is not a book to find out who patented the "treble back-bite underlever" in 1882, but if you enjoy looking at magnificent photos of the finest guns the world has ever seen, this is the book for you. It's a great book for any shotgun enthusiast who loves fine wood, blue steel, and intricate engraving.

The British Shotgun, Volumes I, II, and III by Ian Crudgington & David Baker
The British Shotgun, Volumes I, II, and III by Ian Crudgington & David Baker

The British Shotgun is an attempt to trace, as accurately as possible, the evolution of the shotgun during its formative years in Great Britain. Some of the developments of the earlier periods are known solely from the records of the patent office, others are mentioned in writings of the time, and both these sources have been extensively and painstakingly researched and quoted from by the authors. In addition, great emphasis has been placed on the study of actual guns, both from the authors' own collections and from those of their many friends who have made their treasures available for inspection. Where possible, the authors have shot with the guns concerned, thereby gaining valuable insight into the practical developments that took place during this innovative period.

It is meant as a tribute to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the British gun trade. This highly regarded series grew out of the vision of the authors to write a complete story of the evolution of the British shotgun. This important work includes many previously unrecorded designs and artifacts. For example, nowhere else in print is to be found the whole story of the single trigger, the over-and-under gun, the cheap single barrel, or the classic side-by-side gun. This series has it all.

The work is lavishly illustrated with over 200 photographs and line drawings of whole and stripped guns, patent drawings, contemporary advertisements, portraits and steel engravings.

British Gunmakers, Volumes I, II, & III by Nigel Brown
BRITISH GUNMAKERS-Volume One: London
2004 London, 296pp, color and b&w photos, 8.5x12, hardcover, dj
ISBN: 978-1-904057-47-5
For two hundred years, the gunmakers of London have enjoyed a worldwide reputation for the quality and reliability of their products. Beginning with the Mantons in the eighteenth century and continuing with Purdey, Lang, Lancaster, Beesley, Boss, Holland, and Woodward, London gunmakers have led the world with their technical expertise and craftsmanship. This revised and updated edition chronicles the history of the London gun trade. It provides an alphabetical list of all gunmakers and related trades, and it gives their dates, addresses and changes, and individual histories. There is an alphabetical list of gunmakers' serial number records while various schedules list those individuals who have taken a leading part in the administration of the trade over the years. In addition, there is an alphabetical index of the brand names used by the various businesses in the London trade in respect to guns, rifles, cartridges, and powders. This invaluable and informative reference contains a rich collection of facts and anecdotes about the London trade, which will serve as an encyclopedia and a guide for both collectors and members of the trade. Above all it stands as a monument to those craftsmen past and present who built the London guns.

BRITISH GUNMAKERS-Volume Two: Birmingham, Scotland and the Regions
2005 London, 459pp, color and b&w photos, 8.5x12, hardcover, dj
ISBN: 978-1-904057-50-5
Whilst the fashionable London gunmakers were making a name for themselves in the nineteenth century with their expensive bespoke weapons made in limited quantities, there was a separate gunmaking industry flourishing in Birmingham and the surrounding towns. Although a few traditional makers have survived, most of the gunmaking names to be found within these covers have been amalgamated into other businesses or are now defunct. However, there were and still are gunmakers throughout the country who were able to compete internationally with those of London. Names such as Greener, Westley Richards, Powell in Birmingham, Gibbs in Bristol, Green in Cheltenham, and the Scottish makers of Edinburgh and Glasgow such as Dickson, MacNaughton, Henry, Mortimer, Martin, and more recently Mackay Brown. These are the names known to firearms collectors and users worldwide not just for the weapons they have built, but for many of the innovative designs they developed. This book sets out the history of the Birmingham, Scottish, and regional gunmakers and specialist trade workers throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with individual histories of sixty businesses as well as details of their serial number records, many of which have never been published before. Similarly there is an alphabetical listing of the businesses and individuals, their dates and addresses, separate listings of the brand names used by them, the patents they registered, and information on proof marks. With this book, read in conjunction with volume one, the reader or scholar should be able to trace the history and likely age of practically any shotgun or rifle made by the gunmakers of England, Scotland, and Wales since 1800.

BRITISH GUNMAKERS-Volume Three: Index, appendices & additional London, Birmingham, Regional and Scottish records
2009 England, 299pp, color photos, 8x12, hardcover, dj
ISBN: 978-1-84689-066-6
This is the third and final volume of the most comprehensive series of books ever published on the gunmakers of the British Isles. After many years of research and study, Nigel Brown brings us the final volume! This book enlarges on the factual information set out in Volume One and Volume Two. In addition, and just as important, it also includes the results of the unique record research on 120 additional Birmingham, Scottish, and regional gunmaking firms and over 70 additional London ones. At one time Great Britain had so many gunmakers that they were almost impossible to count-many of whom have disappeared forever. But it can be fairly said that this set of books has done more to bring their information to the fore in a well-illustrated and produced manner than any other work. If you like British guns and are interested in their history, this set must not be missed.

A Hunter's Guide to Aging Lions in Eastern and Southern Africa by Karyl Whitman and Craig Packer
A Hunter's Guide to Aging Lions in Eastern and Southern Africa by Karyl Whitman and Craig Packer
In recent years, the population numbers of the wild African lion have become a cause of concern. These large cats are under increasing pressure from habitat destruction and livestock owners. Antihunters have used this as an opportunity to try to shut down lion hunting, a move that would make the survival chances of the wild African lion much worse. In an effort to promote responsible and sustainable harvests of older male lions, Conservation Force has asked Safari Press to publish this field guide. Designed with a lay-flat binding, it is intended to be taken on a lion hunt in the bush. It shows how to differentiate a young lion from a medium-age one and goes into detail about how to spot an old lion. Field-judging an older lion is not nearly as hard as it would seem since the color of the nose, the condition of the teeth, the condition of the mane, and the markings on the rear legs are all important clues. All these indicators are clearly described and illustrated in this well-researched, high-quality publication.

This guide is an invaluable tool for anyone who wishes to hunt or observe lions. It is the most detailed publication on the subject, bar none. Royalties from the sale of each guide go to Conservation Force, the foremost advocate of sustainable hunting and wise use of our environmental resources.

David McKay Brown: Scotland’s Gun & Rifle Manufacturer by Donald Dallas
David McKay Brown: Scotland's Gun & Rifle Manufacturer by Donald Dallas
David McKay Brown was born in 1941 in Bellshill, Glasgow. His father, a keen poacher, imbued in David an early enthusiasm for guns and shooting. By his early teenage years, he owned a varied collection of guns, and shortly after leaving school, he began a gunmaking apprenticeship with Alex Martin of Glasgow. Martin amalgamated with John Dickson in 1960, and David soon became very familiar with their round action.

In 1967, he set up his own business, initially repairing guns. He was very impressed with the merits of the round action and in 1974 built the first McKay Brown trigger-plate round action. In the 1980s he designed a round action over-and-under gun, and the first such gun, completed in 1992, was much admired for its design and elegance.

Since 1974 he has built 578 round-action guns and rifles, both in side-by-side and O/U configuration. All are of the best quality, and, remarkably, all his guns are built entirely in his own workshop. David himself is a rare breed amongst gunmakers, for he is able to work in every stage in the manufacture of his guns.

This book details David McKay Brown's history from his boyhood years right through to the present. The history and development of the round action and the new O/U gun are described in detail for the first time. There are several chapters that go into great detail about the construction of his guns. Several appendixes are included that list all the McKay Brown guns made and the numbers built of each particular type of gun, sure to be of great interest to McKay Brown owners. This book was produced with the full cooperation of the firm.

Clay Pigeon Shooting: A History by Michael Yardley
Clay Pigeon Shooting: A History by Michael Yardley
Yardley has created a remarkable piece of work on the history of clay pigeon shooting. His history starts with the very first competitive shoots using live pigeons, and then it tracks the development of the glass ball target, the rise of the great trick shooters such as Annie Oakley, the birth of the Olympics, the history of the royal family and clay pigeons, and the use of clay pigeons by Second World War fighter pilots to hone their skills in knocking down moving targets. It's more than just a history of a sport from its very beginning to right up to the modern day. It's a tale of a civilization and how society has treated its best shooters. We see that in the late nineteenth century clay pigeon shooters were the most highly regarded sportsmen of all; then there were decades when the sport was ignored; and now, today, shooting stands on the cusp of a staggering new popularity. It's not just a good history: It's a great read. Includes profiles of Bogardus, Carver, Annie Oakley, and many of the early luminaries of live pigeon and target shooting.

The Weatherby: Stories From the Premier Big-Game Hunters Of The World, 1956-2002
The Weatherby: Stories From the Premier Big-Game Hunters Of The World, 1956-2002 edited by Nancy Vokins
For more than fifty years, the Weatherby Award has been known as the Oscar of the hunting world in recognition of the achievements of the world's greatest hunters. From Herb Klein's first award in 1956 to Rex Baker's award in 2002, all the award winners to date have been included. The editor spent countless hours unearthing the best hunting stories from each of the Weatherby winners, so there are some hold-onto-the-edge-of-your-seat adventures described - tales of hunting on six continents for stunning trophies under the most difficult (and sometimes very amusing) conditions. The stories, many never before published, are by names you will recognize: Jack O'Connor (1957 recipient), Warren Page (1958), Prince Abdorreza of Iran (1962), Dr. Frank Hibben (1964), C. J. McElroy (1969), James Mellon (1972), Rudolf Sand (1976), Valentin de Madariaga (1977), Arthur Carlsberg (1978 posthumous recipient as he fell off a mountain while sheep hunting in Asia right before he was to receive his award), Watson Yoshimoto (1980), Jesus Yuren (1995), and so on. Here is your chance to read how Mellon pursued a giant markhor in Afghanistan with dogged determination; how Carlo Caldesi shot a gaur that gets singed in a brush fire; how Prince Abdorreza searched for a world-record Persian ibex; how Frank Hibben stalked an immense tiger, but ended up with the largest leopard ever taken in his time; how Thorton Snider (1985) found an elephant with monster tusks; how Rudolf Sand pursued an impossible-to-get mountain nyala; and what happened on C. J. McElroy's, founder of SCI, last safari in Africa. A grand total of forty-six interesting stories and biographies, a historical introduction as to how the Weatherby originated, hundreds of fascinating photographs, and statistical information and background on the award are included. This limited edition has been signed by no less than sixteen living Weatherby winners, a unique feat in book publishing and sure to make this book a superb collector's item in years to come.

Wild Life In Africa by John G. Millais
Wild Life In Africa by John G. Millais
John G. Millais is well known as one of England's preeminent wildlife painters. Born in a Victorian era family of artists and hunters, he wrote and illustrated some of the finest hunting books ever. Now for the first time since 1928 when John Millais printed a very small run for private distribution, Wild Life in Africa is again available - and at a popular price! Safari Press faithfully reproduced Millais's coffee-table book that consists of twenty plates depicting African game scenes. Eleven of the plates are in black and white and nine are in color. Antiquarian book experts feel that there were likely less than 100 copies originally printed. Safari Press has reprinted this very rare Millais work. Like the original, we used very heavy stock (paper); consequently, the quality of the reproduction is excellent. The subjects of Millais brush and pen are mostly lions, elephants, rhino, and buffalo. In addition he depicts hippo, sable, giant eland, and landscapes from East and southern Africa. A magnificent work that is sure to be a collector's item once this edition sells out.
